The te-form is one of the most useful Japanese verb forms. Once you master it, many grammar patterns become easier.
Why Te-Form Is Essential
You need te-form for:
- connecting actions
- making requests
- progressive tense
- giving permission and prohibition
Step 1: Identify Verb Group
- ru-verb (ichidan)
- u-verb (godan)
- irregular verbs (suru, kuru)
Step 2: Apply Te-Form Rule
- ru-verb: taberu -> tabete
- u-verb ending in mu/bu/nu: yomu -> yonde
- u-verb ending in ku: kaku -> kaite
- u-verb ending in gu: oyogu -> oyoide
- u-verb ending in su: hanasu -> hanashite
- irregular: suru -> shite, kuru -> kite
